A rundown of the seven U.S. maritime academies:

Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, Maine

Depending on their majors, students can choose the conventional college route or participate in the Regiment of Midshipmen, a leadership and management program.

Great Lakes Maritime Academy, Traverse City, Mich.

Students can train to become deck officers, engineering officers or business professionals, and become licensed to pilot unlimited tonnage or horsepower in both the Great Lakes and the oceans.

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y.

The four-year curriculum allows students to earn a bachelor's degree and train to become merchant marine officers or commissioned officers in a reserve component. Admission requires a congressional nomination.

The California Maritime Academy, Vallejo, Calif.

The only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast, this campus is best known for its floating classroom: the 500-foot Golden Bear Training Ship.

Texas Maritime Academy, Galveston, Texas

This campus of Texas A&M University boasts the lowest tuition of all U.S. maritime schools and the highest admission of women: 20 percent.

State University of New York Maritime College, Throgs Neck, N.Y.

Nearly 140 years old, SUNY Maritime College has repeatedly made lists for top-tier regional colleges and best engineering programs.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Buzzards Bay, Mass.

This academy offers studies in environmental science, marine safety, maritime transportation, international business, marine biology and many other areas. More than 40 percent of its students play on one or more of the school's competitive sports teams.
