If you're looking to enjoy some mid-tour R&R or post-deployment leave at one of the Armed Forces Recreation Centers, keep in mind some offer better deals than others:

Best: Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

Discount: 40 percent off on all rooms and dining; plus, complimentary vacation photo posted online.

How long: Up to 14 nights on mid-tour R&R, with a two-night minimum. Post-deployment block leave visits are limited to two days no more, no less although you may reserve up to two rooms.

Who's eligible: Troops and Defense Department civilians on R&R leave from a 270-day assignment to a country in direct support of Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom, Balkans, Kosovo; service members who have just completed a 270-day tour may also participate while their unit is in a block-leave status.

Good: Hale Koa, Honolulu, Hawaii

Discount: 30 percent discount on room and all food and beverages.

How long: Up to a 14-day stay.

Who's eligible: Troops and DoD civilians on OIF/OEF R&R or on the block leave program within 60 days of return.

Fair: Shades of Green, Orlando, Fla.

Discount: 20 percent off room reservations.

How long: Up to 14 nights.

Who's eligible: Troops and DoD civilians serving a minimum of 270 consecutive days in a CENTCOM area of responsibility or Balkans location. Must be on R&R during the visit or have returned from deployment within the past 12 months.


The Dragon Hill Lodge in South Korea and the The Cape Henry Inn and Beach Club at Virginia Beach, Va., do not offer mid- or post-tour specials.
