What do you think?

Marine Corps Times wants to hear from active-duty Marines about the decision. Send your name, rank, billet and duty station along with your comments in an email to senior writer Dan Lamothe at dlamothe@militarytimes.com. Your thoughts could be published in a forthcoming edition of Marine Corps Times.

The Marine Corps will require nearly all Marines to dress up on Fridays beginning this week, following a directive issued by Commandant Gen. Jim Amos.

Effective this month, the uniform of the day on Fridays from November to March will be the Service B. From April to October, it will be the Service C. The commandant wants all non-deployed Marines and sailors assigned to Marine units to participate, although some exceptions will be granted, according to an email to senior leaders by Lt. Gen. Willie Williams, the chief of Marine Corps staff.

The decision means most Marines across the Corps will be wearing "bravos" during the winter and "charlies" during the summer to close the week. The bravos include a khaki-colored shirt and tie and olive drab trousers. The charlies include a short-sleeve khaki shirt and olive drab trousers.

Williams' email did not explain why the commandant made the change, but it may be related to his push to improve military appearance and weed out overweight Marines across the service. In a Marine Corps news release published Wednesday, a senior enlisted adviser said the Corps seems to have strayed from its "‘spit and polish' pride."

"Unlike the utility uniform, the service uniforms are form fitting, and this characteristic provides leaders with an opportunity to frequently evaluate the personal appearance of their Marines without inducing a work stoppage," said Sgt. Maj. Michael Sprague, of Force Headquarters Group, Marine Corps Forces Reserve.
