CMC updates required reading list for Marines

Commandant Gen. Jim Amos has released the newest version of his professional reading list, some of which is required for all Marines.

The reading is outlined in all-Marine message 001/13, published Jan. 2. Four books labeled "Commandant's Choice" are now a requirement for all Marines, and other titles are listed as a must, depending on an individual's rank. Additional books are listed as recommended reading in categories that include aviation, logistics, counterinsurgency, roots of maneuver warfare and wounded warriors, the ALMAR said.

"Books listed at each rank level are required, while the books listed under categories consist of recommended readings to expand understanding in specific areas," Amos said in the message. "Each Marine shall read a minimum of three books from the ‘Commandant's Choice' or ‘Level' sections each year."

Many of the books listed have been required reading for years, although their positions on the list have changed. For example, Amos required all Marines to read "First to Fight: An Inside View of the U.S. Marine Corps," by retired Lt. Gen. Victor Krulak, in a message released in July 2011. Krulak's book is still on the new list, but is now identified as a requirement for sergeants and staff sergeants.

The new Commandant's Choice books are "A Message to Garcia," by Elbert Hubbard; "The Warrior Ethos," by Steven Pressfield; and two books by the Corps itself: "Leading Marines" and "Warfighting."

One book not listed is Sgt. Dakota Meyer's "Into the Fire: A Firsthand Account of the Most Extraordinary Battle in the Afghan War." It was published in September, providing a firsthand account of the actions for which Meyer in 2011 became the first living Marine to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War.

No explanation was given for the book's omission, but it can take awhile for a new title to be included. For example, a book by Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Workman, a Navy Cross recipient, made the list this time in the wounded warriors category after being left off in 2011. "Shadow of the Sword: A Marine's Journey of War, Heroism and Redemption" was published in 2009.

The books listed are discussed at formal schools, and also during professional military education sessions conducted at units throughout the Corps, said Lt. Col. Joseph Plenzler, a spokesman for the commandant.

Meeting the requirement to read three books a year from the list is noted in a Marine's fitness report and taken into account when assigning proficiency and conduct marks, said Maj. Shawn Haney, a spokeswoman at Manpower and Reserve Affairs, out of Quantico, Va.
