BUFFALO, N.Y. — The New York veteran who started the nation's first Veteran of Foreign Wars post for women says she supports the Pentagon's plans to lift the ban on women serving in combat.
Marlene Roll of Alden says if an American woman is serving overseas in the military, she's likely already in a combat area. She says Thursday she also has no problem with women applying for special operations units, as long as they meet the requirements and training standards aren't lowered.
Roll served with an Army Reserve medical unit during the first Gulf War. After that, she started the Dorothy Kubik/Katherine Galloway VFW Post in West Seneca. She has served as director of county veterans' services in the Buffalo and Rochester areas, and works with veterans through the VFW's regional office in Buffalo.
