In a continued effort to recruit junior officers into the Reserve and fill "critical shortfalls in company grade staffing," officials have doubled the bonus offered to those who join select units for at least three years.

First lieutenants and captains who affiliate with one of 42 specific units in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve are now eligible for $20,000, according to Marine administrative message 065/13, signed Feb. 5.

"This $20,000 bonus is a first for ground MOS officers; previously, only pilots were eligible for the larger $20,000 bonus," wrote Maj. Shawn Haney, a Manpower and Reserve Affairs spokeswoman at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., in response to questions.

For the past several years, Manpower officials have worked to draw officers coming off active duty into the Reserve, but it has been difficult to keep the Reserve stocked with junior officers. Many of those transitioning off active duty already have several tours under their belt. Many are majors or higher by the time they transition to the Reserve. That led officials to offer a $10,000 affiliation bonuses to lieutenants and captains for several years running before recently doubling the incentive.

Transitioning active-duty officers aren't the only Marines eligible for the bonus. Junior officers in the Individual Ready Reserve and Active Reserve, as well as individual mobilization augmentees, can also join and take home $20,000. And company-grade officers who desire to join an SMCR unit not listed in MARADMIN 065/13 can still take home a smaller $10,000 affiliation bonus.

The Reserve is an alluring opportunity for those who hope to pursue a civilian career but want to remain in uniform. Additionally, the Reserve is being spared by Defense Department manpower cuts. While a handful of units are being reorganized — moved, activated or deactivated — the overall number of reservists will remain at about 39,600. As a result, the SMCR offers stable career prospects.

Primary eligibility requirements include:

• Must not have been selected for promotion to major.

• Lieutenants and captains must not have been passed over for promotion.

• Prior-service or active officers must have had — or be eligible for — an honorable release.

• Reserve officers must not have a break in service longer than four years since serving in the active component or the SMCR.

Officers must apply for and receive bonus approval by Aug. 31. Bonuses are given on a first-come, first-serve basis, so interested Marines are encouraged to act quickly.

For a comprehensive list of requirements, and how to apply, refer to the MARADMIN, available online.

First lieutenants through captains who affiliate with these units in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve are now eligible for a $20,000 bonus:
