A California-based Marine died in combat Friday in Afghanistan.
Staff Sgt. Jonathan D. Davis, 34, of Kayenta, Ariz., died in Helmand province, military officials said in a news release. He was serving as a liaison to the Georgian military as part of the Marine Corps' Regimental Combat Team 7. Marines have partnered with the Georgians in Helmand for the last several years.
Davis, a motor transport operations chief, was based at Camp Pendleton, according to the news release. It's not immediately clear how he died.
A Purple Heart recipient, Davis had combat experience in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to the news release. He joined the Marine Corps in 1997.
U.S. combat deaths have decreased significantly in recent weeks as Afghan forces are taking a greater role in providing security throughout the country. Davis' death, announced Monday, is the first U.S. fatality reported by DOD since Jan. 20, according to its website.
