Pendleton Marines in anti-piracy training

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Camp Pendleton Marines are practicing how to deal with boarding pirate ships in training aboard a ship moored in the port of Long Beach.

A total of 107 Marines descended from helicopters onto the deck of the ship and practiced searching the ship during Tuesday morning’s military exercise.

Staff Sgt. Ben Cohen said a real operation would likely involve surveillance drones, translators, night vision goggles and many more support vessels. Marines are trained to identify key external features and proceed from there.

The Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Maritime Raid Force practiced on the SS Cape Inscription, which is larger than a ship likely to be commanded or hijacked by pirates.

Snipers watched from the decks as Marines in full gear raced through narrow hallways inside the ship.
