A government vehicle driven by a sailor in Okinawa, Japan, struck and killed a local man Thursday at a gate outside Camp Foster, according to reports.
The accident happened about 12:30 p.m. local time near Gate 3, III Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Corps Installations Pacific officials said in a statement.
The Corps did not release details about the crash but said officials are cooperating with Okinawa police officers investigating the accident. “We would like to express our condolences to the family and friends of the community member who died in the accident and assure them that they are in our thoughts and prayers,” officials said in the statement.
A 28-year-old petty officer third-class was driving a government van that made a right turn at an intersection when it struck a motorcyclist, according to Stars and Stripes. The victim, Isao Kiyan, 63, an Okinawa City resident, died an hour later at a local hospital.
