Marine officials are rolling out a new Web application across the service that will help family readiness officers better communicate critical — or simply useful — information to Marines and their families.
Dubbed eMarine, it will replace the Mass Communication Tool on Marine Online as the one-stop-shop for unit-specific information, including announcements about deployments, homecomings, news and events.
The new unit-specific eMarine websites will also support photo galleries, videos, surveys, polls, calendars and documents, according to family readiness officials, making the sites an additional venue for two-way communication between Marines, their families, readiness officers and commanders.
“eMarine is an authorized and official site our commanders can use to communicate family readiness information to their Marines and families that cannot be easily compromised or be in violation of operational security regulations,” said Ann Crittenden, the Family Readiness Branch head for the Marine and Family Programs Division at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va.
Family readiness officers are required to set up eMarine pages for all battalion- or squadron-level units by Aug. 31, according to Marine administrative message 161/13, signed March 27. Company-level units can request to establish their own pages, too, especially if they are at a remote location, away from their parent battalion or squadron. That helps inform Marines and family members of events unique to their immediate geographic area.
To ensure compliance with the new requirement for battalion- and squadron-level units, eMarine unit sites were made “an inspectable item through the inspector general of the Marine Corps,” according to the MARADMIN.
The rollout of eMarine will divorce family readiness information from Marine Online by replacing the current Mass Communication Tool, unveiled in 2011 to help FROs automate the process of compiling Marines’ personal contact information. Henceforth, Marine Online will be used strictly for individual personnel records and documentation, Crittenden said.
The transition to eMarine shouldn’t require any immediate action by individual Marines. FROs are responsible for entering contact information for Marines in their unit.
With “a standard look and feel,” eMarine should also help ease Marines’ transitions to new commands in the future. As Marines check into a new unit, FROs will help them subscribe to their new unit’s website, enter or update their contact information and invite family members to subscribe to the site.
While not all units have established their individual pages, the new application can be accessed at www.emarine.org.
