Have your say

How is CPO 365 Phase II working at your command? Have you noticed improvements? Have you witnessed unprofessional behavior? Send your thoughts to staff writer Mark D. Faram at mfaram@navytimes.com.

In the wake of reports of “unprofessional behavior” during CPO 365 Phase II — formerly known as chief induction — Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (AW/NAC) Mike Stevens has ordered a two-day standdown to allow commands to re-evaluate how they’re conducting the training of chief-selects.

The pause in training started at 7 a.m. Monday and ends at the same time Wednesday.

“I’ve had two anonymous reports of unprofessional behavior happening during CPO 365 Phase II,” Stevens said in a statement Tuesday. “It’s important to give every CPO Mess a moment to take time and review the CPO Guidance, ensuring that all are operating within the guidelines that were prescribed.”

Stevens’ office had no details of the alleged reports because they were not made directly to his office. Most training has been suspended during the standdown, with few exceptions. For example, uniform fittings can proceed, as well as already scheduled sessions of the Chief Petty Officer Leadership Course.

“It is important that we continue to train chief petty officer selectees while operating within the guidelines, and that is not open for interpretation,” Stevens said. “This should be a rewarding experience.”

Stevens introduced new rules this year for chief season to instill more professionalism. He also “sundowned” the term “induction” as it was too often associated with inappropriate behavior.
