Network problem prevents Marines from accessing Marine Corps websites

The Marine Corps was troubleshooting a computer network error on Tuesday that prevented personnel using the service’s vast unclassified computer network from accessing Marine Corps web pages.

The Marine Corps Network Operations and Security Center out of Quantico, Va., was investigating the problem, known as as a Domain Name System error. The organization manages the Corps’ defense of its own computer networks.

Marines were informed of the problem Tuesday in part through an email message distributed by the Defense Media Activity at Fort Meade, Md., which produces several Marine Corps publications. The message said the network error affected computers on the unclassified Non-classified Internet Protocol Router Network, commonly known as NIPRNET.

“All users not on the Marine Corps NIPRNET are able to access the site without issue,” the message said.

No estimated time was offered on when the problem would be fixed. The network security center in Quantico is “working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue,” said Capt. Ty Balzer, a Marine spokesman at the Pentagon.
