WASHINGTON — The District of Columbia’s fire chief is praising two Army sergeants who came to the aid of a man who was hit by a Metro bus near the National Mall.

The Washington Post reports that Sgts. John Russell and Brian Williams were jogging Wednesday morning when they tended to the man, who was bleeding from a badly broken leg and had a gash on his forehead.

Russell and Williams served together in Afghanistan and helped treat trauma patients there.

D.C. police are investigating the circumstances of the accident. A Metro spokeswoman said the jogger apparently ran into the street against a traffic light before the bus hit him.

Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe praised the soldiers’ efforts and said the city is fortunate for having a “well-trained civilian population.”
