A Fort Bragg paratrooper drowned Saturday at White Lake, N.C., authorities said.

Pvt. Jordan Miles, 21, of Longview, Texas, was an intelligence analyst with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

Local police said Miles was with four other people at Goldston’s Beach when he went under a pier and hit his head, according to the Fayetteville Observer.

After a 20-minute search, Miles was reportedly found near the end of the pier, police said.

The drowning was ruled accidental.

“Pvt. Miles was an exceptional Paratrooper and an integral member of our team.” Lt. Col. Mark S. Childress, Miles’ battalion commander, said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, we will never forget him.”

Miles joined the Army in October 2012 and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in June. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge.
