WASHINGTON — Washington archbishop Cardinal Donald Wuerl is celebrating a special Mass of healing and consolation after the shooting rampage at the Navy Yard.

Wuerl joined parishioners Tuesday at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in downtown Washington and prayed first for the families of the victims. He says the victims’ deaths are a reminder that we don’t know when the end will come.

But he says the world needs greater healing for all that is broken in society that leads to such a tragedy. He says there must be recognition that “something is wrong.”

Wuerl says only love can conquer violence, but the nation can build “a civilization of love” one person at a time.

Earlier in the day, military officials and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel laid a wreath at the Navy Memorial to honor those killed.
