Air Force Times and other Military Times publications have a new online Classifieds section that aims to help service members and families buy and sell items and services close to their installations.

You can buy and sell furniture, cars and other merchandise, find attorneys and other services, check home prices, find an apartment, buy tickets to an event, and browse CareerBuilder job listings.

What you need to know:

1. Free listings. Go to militarytimes.com/classifieds. To post a listing for free, register for an account. With each free ad, you can post five photos and a video embed for 30 days. Label your items under the appropriate categories. The system will automatically categorize your listing with others in a 60-mile radius of your location. After 30 days, you will receive an email asking if you would like to keep your listing up, and you can renew for free.

Pay up to $5.99 to get additional features. For example, instead of five photos with your item, you can post up to 20. Your ad gets better placement, too.

2. Browse and buy. After registering, members can browse at more than 500 bases of all military branches.

Can’t find what you’re looking for? The “advanced search” might help. If the item is not available, you can receive an email alert when it shows up.

3. Registration tip. Sign up with any email address, but there are benefits to using your dot-mil address. Your listing will have the green “.MIL” stamp indicating you’re “a verified military user,” said Ameir Ali, digital product manager at Gannett Government Media.

4. Powered by SargesList. The site is powered by SargesList, which is already military focused. Started by veterans in 2011, the team discovered a need for classifieds to connect military members and families to items they may need for their next move.

What sets SargesList apart from sites like Craigslist is that it’s not city- or county-specific, said Lisa Klinkhammer, SargesList president and founder. “With military bases, sometimes there’s nothing around for miles. Sites like Craigslist are limited that way — here we provide the user access to items, events, jobs and more even if you live in a very rural area.”

5. The community advantage. “The biggest plus here is where these people — buyers and sellers — are coming from: the same kind of community,” Ali said.
