Plans continue for Fort Hood shooting memorial

KILLEEN, TEXAS — Funding issues have delayed a Central Texas memorial to victims of the Fort Hood shooting rampage that left 13 people dead and more than 30 wounded.

Tuesday was the fourth anniversary of the gunfire blamed on an Army major who in August was convicted and sentenced to death for the attack. Nidal Hasan (nih-DAHLí hah-SAHNí) remains in military custody pending execution.

The Killeen Daily Herald reports the memorial garden and gazebo are planned near the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. The nearly $403,000 project will include sculptures on granite pedestals representing those who died. The Herald is also reporting that Building 42003, the site of the shooting, will be demolished.

Center spokeswoman Connie Kuehl (keel) says the memorial committee has raised about 75 percent of the necessary funds. Kuehl says contributions have slowed in the past couple of years.
