Marines who responded to Hurricane Sandy in the U.S., Typhoon Juan in the Philippines and to floods in Thailand are now eligible for the Humanitarian Service Award.

Marines deployed to the Philippines in response to Typhoon Juan from Oct. 19 to Oct. 23, 2010. Scores were killed in the storm that left more than 200,000 people homeless.

The Marine Corps is now accepting submissions from the following units that assisted in those relief efforts: 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade; Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit; Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 265 and Combat Logistics Battalion 31.

When a devastating flood hit Thailand during the 2011 monsoon season, causing more than 800 deaths, Marines were dispatched for more than a month to conduct humanitarian relief efforts. Marines rendered aid from Oct. 15 to Dec. 3, 2011.

The Marine Corps is taking medal submissions from the following units that assisted with Thailand flood relief: 3rd Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistics Regiment 35, Combat Logistics Regiment 37, Combat Logistics Regiment 3, III Marine Expeditionary Force, 7th Communications Battalion, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262, and detachments from Marine Corps Base Japan.

Most recently, Marines went to New York and New Jersey to assist with relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which swept through that mid-Atlantic region in late 2012.

Marine units assisted in relief efforts there between Oct. 29 and Nov. 25, 2012.

The Marine Corps is accepting submissions from the following units that assisted: II Marine Expeditionary Force; Battalion Landing Team 3/2; 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit; Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266; Combat Logistics Battalion 26; Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 366; Marine Light Attack Squadron 467; 2nd Marine Logistics Group; and Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252.

Eligibility for the medal requires “meritorious, direct, non-routine participation in a significant military act or operation of a humanitarian nature,” according to the MARADMINs.

An endorser is required to verify an individual Marine’s participation in a qualifying humanitarian operation.

Commands should submit rosters of eligible Marines to the Military Awards Branch.

Additional details and a complete list of commands eligible to receive the medal can be found in Marine administrative messages 632/13 (Typhoon Juan), 633/13 (Hurricane Sandy) and 634/13 (Thailand floods), all dated Nov. 27.
