A Fort Polk soldier upset about conditions in the barracks, provided a video to a social media site showing coffee-brown shower water and a moldy bathroom ceiling in a barracks room.

The video, posted on the Facebook page of U.S. Army W.T.F! moments, sparked outrage about soldiers’ living conditions on the post.

In the 33-second video, a soldier describes the “disgusting” brown shower water at a room in the 1st Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment barracks. “Work orders have been put in repeatedly and (Chain of Command) have been notified yet this problem still persists,” the Facebook post says.

After the video appeared online, officials at Fort Polk, led by post commander Brig. Gen. William B. Hickman, conducted barracks inspections across the installation, a post official said. Hickman also walked through and inspected the barracks rooms.

“The barracks-wide inspection conducted Dec. 5 on Fort Polk resulted in the temporary move of three soldiers to different rooms,” Fort Polk spokesperson Kim Reischling said in an emailed statement.

She said a hot water circulation pump had failed, which caused scaling of the pipes and the brown water in the soldiers’ rooms.

The soldiers were moved to different rooms because of the water, Reischling said.

“Fort Polk's Directorate of Public Works will follow-up to ensure that barracks with discolored water have their water lines properly flushed and properly cleaned,” the statement said.
