Three of the four Navy SEALs injured during evacuation efforts over South Sudan last weekend have returned to the U.S. for further medical care after a stop in Germany, a U.S. European Command spokesman said Friday.

The men, all assigned to a West Coast-based Naval Special Warfare command, were injured Dec. 21 when the tilt-rotor Osprey carrying them was hit by small-arms fire. The evacuation mission turned back after taking fire, but United Nations and civilian aircraft evacuated Americans and citizens from ďpartner nationsĒ the next day.

Three of the SEALs were taken to Germanyís Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for treatment after a short stop in Kenya. The fourth remained in Kenya while his condition stabilized; he was flown to Landsthul on Christmas. Their names have not been released.

The fourth SEAL underwent surgery Thursday at Landstuhl and is in stable condition, EUCOM spokesman Navy Capt. Greg Hicks said Friday, confirming a report from CNNís Jake Tapper. Hicks said the other three were transferred to California.

The death toll in South Sudan has surpassed 1,000 people. Violence began Dec. 15, triggered by an attempted military coup, according to reports.
