DoD IG to review sex assault investigators

Are military investigators responding properly to complaints of sexual assaults?

The Defense Department Inspector General will tackle that controversial question this year.

The IG recently launched a new probe, entitled: “Evaluation of Military Criminal Investigative Organization Sexual Assault Investigations.”

The investigation will focus on whether those organizations, specifically the Army Criminal Investigation Command, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, followed regulations when troop’s file a complaint about a sexual assault.

The IG will be looking at how those agencies handled hundreds of investigations of sexual assaults involving adult victims that were closed in 2013, according to a Dec. 20 memo released by the IG’s office. The memo notified the investigation commands to expect a detailed request for data and documents.

Most IG reports are available to the public upon completion.

Victims’ advocates and lawmakers on Capitol Hill have complained that some military officials fail to aggressively pursue some sexual assault complaints.
