Feb. 28 deadline for family members' scholarship applications

The deadline is Feb. 28 to apply for a $2,000 scholarship under the Scholarships for Military Children Program. At least one scholarship will be awarded at each commissary with qualified applicants.

Applications are available at commissaries and online at www.militaryscholar.org.

Completed applications must be received at a commissary by close of business Feb. 28, either hand-delivered or shipped by U.S. Postal Service or other delivery methods — but not by email or fax.

In addition to the two-page application, and transcript, a short, typed essay of no more than 500 words is required. This year’s essay question delves into the challenges that military families face aside from service member deployments. The exact question and other documentation required for the application are available at www.militaryscholar.org.

Those eligible for scholarships are under age 23, and are dependent, unmarried children of active-duty, reserve, National Guard or retired military members; survivors of service members who died while on active duty or survivors of those who died while receiving retired pay from the military.

Applicants must be enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a full-time undergraduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university in the fall 2014 term.

The scholarships are primarily funded by donations from manufacturers and suppliers whose products are sold at military commissaries worldwide. The Fisher House Foundation administers the program.

More than $11 million has been awarded to military children in the 13 years the scholarship program has existed. In previous years, the scholarships were $1,500 each.
