NORFOLK, VA. — A Coast Guard reservist has admitting making false claims.

Jeffrey T. Byrne pleaded guilty to the charge Wednesday in U.S. magistrate court in Norfolk.

Federal prosecutors say the 43-year-old Byrne was assigned to a Portsmouth duty station when he received activation orders in 2011.

Although he lived in Hampton Roads, Byrne listed Frisco, N.C., as his permanent address. Prosecutors say that allowed him to claim higher lodging and per-diem costs.

He also began renting a home from his girlfriend whom he later married, even though reservists are barred from renting temporary lodging from family or friends.

Byrne continued to file lodging and receipts using his wife's maiden name after she legally changed her last name.

Prosecutors say Byrne has paid back the estimated loss of $112,000 to the Coast Guard.
