WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel swore in his new deputy, Robert Work, during a small ceremony at the Pentagon Monday morning.
Work becomes the 32nd deputy defense secretary, succeeding Christine Fox, who has served in an acting capacity since late last year when Ashton Carter departed.
“I am humbled by the confidence President Obama and Secretary Hagel have placed in me and pledge to do everything possible to help maintain America’s military edge,” Work said in a statement released by the Defense Department. “Ash Carter and Christine Fox both distinguished themselves while serving as deputy secretary and have left a legacy of excellence.”
The Senate confirmed Work on April 30, nearly three months after he was nominated by Obama.
