The 100,000 Jobs Mission, which has already surpassed its initial goal of hiring that many vets by 2020, is nearly three-quarters of the way to its revised goal of 200,000 vet hires, according to a project official.
Through the first quarter of this year, the 154 companies affiliated with the project have hired 140,832 vets, said Shannon O’Reilly, a spokeswoman for project pioneer JPMorgan Chase.
The mission tallied 117,439 hires by the end of 2013. It includes companies from many industries, among them Amazon.com Inc., AT&T, Humana, Macy’s, ManTech International Corp., Shell Oil Co. and United Airlines Inc.
Those companies and others associated with the project met Wednesday in Washington, D.C., to discuss challenges and best practices related to vet hiring, O’Reilly said.
For some businesses, one challenge can be overcoming misconceptions about veterans, such as the view that all or most who deployed have post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury, retired Gen. Peter Chiarelli, chief executive officer of the nonprofit One Mind for Research, said in a statement.
“Of the small percentage that have been affected and seek treatment, there is no reason they cannot perform in the workplace,” Chiarelli said. “This is why coalitions such as the 100,000 Jobs Mission are important because they work to ensure that the invisible wounds of war do not brand a service member as damaged.”
The mission, which started in 2011 with just 11 companies, is also expanding its scope to include military spouses, launching the Military Spouse Talent Exchange, which will allow companies to recruit, recommend and refer military spouses for job openings.
A similar initiative for vets, the Veteran Talent Exchange, launched in July.
