Watch: 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines deactivation ceremony

May. 30, 2014 - 06:00AM   |

The day has arrived: as a part of the Corps manpower reduction goals, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, 7th Marine Regiment is officially deactivating.

Known as the “thundering third” or the “darkside,” 3/4 has completed several deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s home to about 1,000 Marines, who will mostly disperse among other active units. The battalion has a long history of deactivations, and was tapped a few years ago when the Corps sought to lower it’s active battalions from 27 to 23 as a result of budget cuts.
