Ex-senator Jim Webb not interested in VA chief's job

Former U.S. senator and Navy secretary Jim Webb doesn’t want to be the next VA secretary, but he is still mulling a White House bid.

“I’m always happy to give advice, but I’m really not interested in being in the administration right now,” Webb said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union.

Webb, who served one term in the Senate before retiring after the 2012 elections, has been mentioned as a possible successor to VA chief Eric Shinseki, who resigned on Friday amid a growing scandal over long wait times for medical appointments and care for veterans. President Obama has appointed Sloan Gibson, a VA deputy and former CEO of the USO, as the interim secretary.

Webb said the Department of Veterans Affairs needs a leader “who knows how to run institutions and who understands the nature of government bureaucracies.”

The former senator has gone back to writing books since he left Capitol Hill. He told CNN that he’s taking it “one day at a time” as he considers a 2016 presidential bid.
