Military Times newspapers not reaching Navy, Marine Corps bases overseas

If you’re stationed outside the U.S. and can’t find a copy of a Military Times newspaper, here’s why: The company that delivers the papers to Navy and Marine Corps bases overseas has gone out of business.

As a result, roughly 1,800 copies of the June 9th edition of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps Times were not shipped to exchanges on bases in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Cuba, said Edgar Carpenter IV, director of audience development for Military Times. Domestic sales have not been interrupted.

The Navy Exchange Service Command and Marine Corps Exchange are expected to take a few weeks to select a new international distributor with which Military Times can negotiate a contract, Carpenter said Tuesday.

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service uses a different international distributor, so its outlets are not affected, he said.

Source Interlink Distribution had been the international distributor for the Military Times newspapers and other publications, but when Time Inc. decided to cut ties with the distributor last month, it proved to be the company’s death knell, the New York Times reported on May 31.

“While we have made significant progress in finding mutually agreeable solutions with publishers and national distributors alike, one of our largest suppliers has recently decided to cease supply and move in a different direction,” Source Interlink Distribution CEO Michael L. Sullivan wrote in a letter to clients that was posted online by an industry consultant. “As such, it's with a heavy heart that I am writing to advise you that Source Interlink Distribution Company will be discontinuing all operations in the near future.”

Sullivan did not return phone messages Tuesday seeking comment.
