Fort Bragg specialist died at hospital after PT

A Fort Bragg, North Carolina, soldier who died Saturday was out running when he felt ill and went to a local hospital in a private vehicle, according to civilian authorities.

Spc. Vince E. Gaillard Jr., 23, was pronounced dead at approximately 7:15 a.m. on Saturday. He was on leave at the time in St. Stephen, South Carolina, near his home.

Gaillard, who died at the hospital, has undergone an autopsy, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury. The results were be complete in six weeks, but they will be shared with his next of kin and will not be made public by the coroner’s office.

Salisbury said he does not suspect foul play.

Gaillard, of Cross, South Carolina, enlisted on Nov. 8, 2010, as an aviation operations specialist. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion, 82nd CAB, 82nd Airborne, out of Fort Bragg, N.C.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends affected by this loss,” said Gaillard’s commander, Capt. Seth Green. “Spc. Vince Gaillard was a dedicated Soldier who was committed one hundred percent to his job and the Soldiers around him. The news of his passing is a great loss to our team.”

Gaillard deployed to Afghanistan from May 2012 to February 2013 while assigned to the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade.

His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, and the Army Aviation Badge.
