Education: Reserve Educational Assistance Program
REAP is a relatively new benefit providing educational assistance to Selected Reserve and Individual Ready Reserve members called to active service in response to a war or national emergency, as declared by the president or Congress.
Eligibility is determined by the Defense Department or Homeland Security Department. Generally, reserve component members who have served on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001, for at least 90 consecutive days under Title 10 of the U.S. Code in Iraq or Afghanistan operations, and possibly other operations, are eligible.
National Guard members are eligible if their active service extends for 90 consecutive daysand their service is authorized under section 502(f), Title 32 of the U.S. Code; authorized by the president or secretary of defense for a national emergency; and supported by federal funds.
Payments are a percentage of the Montgomery GI Bill — Active Duty rate, based on the number of continuous days served on active duty. Current REAP rates range from $440.40 to $880.80 per month for full-time students.
å For members released before 90 days due to injury, illness or disease incurred or aggravated in the line of duty, and members who serve 90 days but less than one year, the full-time REAP rate is 40 percent of the full-time GI Bill rate, a total of $440.40.
å For members who serve one year but less than two years receive 60 percent, the full-time REAP rate is $660.60.
å For members who serve two or more continuous years, the full-time REAP rate is 80 percent, or $880.80.
