Education: Spouse education
Career Advancement Accounts. Under a new pilot program at 18 installations, eligible military spouses can receive $3,000 a year for up to two years to pay for expenses directly related to postsecondary education and training.
Eligible spouses are those with sponsors in pay grades E-1 to E-5 and O-1 to O-3. Eligible expenses include tuition, books, necessary equipment, and credentialing and licensing fees in nationally identified high-growth, portable career fields such as education, health care, information technology, construction trades and financial services.
Military spouses may apply at Department of Labor One-Stop Career Centers on participating installations’ Voluntary Education Centers. More information, including the list of the 18 installations in the pilot program, can be found at http://www.milspouse.org, and at Voluntary Education Centers and/or family centers at participating installation.
Preliminary discussions are underway within the Defense Department to expand this program.
Spouses to Teachers. This program, available in all 50 states, Europe and the Pacific to spouses of active duty, National Guard and reserve members, offers up to $600 to reimburse the cost of examinations required for state teacher licensure and certification.
It also provides counseling on state certification requirements and options, transcript review and guidance for starting or finishing a degree, guidance with financial aid resources, and application assistance for transferring certification from one state to the next.
