Making a permanent change of station is tough enough when you’re single — add a family into the mix and it gets a whole lot more challenging. Here are resources to help you survive your next move.

Relocation

SmartWebMove, http://www.smartwebmove.navsup.navy.mil, is a program for soldiers and sailors moving within the continental U.S., and for members of all branches of services stationed in the Washington, D.C. area. It’s designed to help you plan and set up your move online.

Air Force Crossroads includes links to an online flea market for airmen, links to real estate companies, self-service moving companies and more.

MyArmyLifeToo.com tip sheets and checklists for moving with kids, finding schools, job hunting spouses and more.

The Navy’s Lifelines site features information about overseas moves and packing luggage for overseas moves, moving pets and numerous tip sheets.

Automated Housing Referral Network is a DoD-sponsored Web site that connects military families to listings of rental properties at 66 military communities, with more being added each month. Military housing referral officials are involved in the process too, and you can find out whether they’ve checked out the property. The site also includes a referral service to realtors who will help families buy or sell homes.

The American Moving and Storage Association variety of tips and resources ranging from helping involve children in the move, to choosing a moving company.

The Navy Exchange’s Military Moving Center is a free service that helps you connect to services such as cable, telephone, and satellite, allowing you to compare prices and sign up for everything online.

Explore information about travel pay at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service site. And find out what allowances you qualify for in a PCS move through the Defense Department Per Diem, Travel and Transportation Allowance Committee’s site at https://secureapp2.hqda.pentagon.mil/perdiem/faqpcs.html.

Children

MilitaryStudent.org range of information for students, parents, educators, and military installation commanders. It’s tailored for different child age groups and includes help for children who are moving , including school switches. Provides information on civilian schools as well as Defense Department schools.

The Department of Defense Education Activity’s official Web site for schools in the U.S. as well as overseas, with news, locations, contact information, policies and school calendar.

Military Teens on the Move children and teens to ideas to help them to get through a move and help them adjust to their new community and school.

The Military Child Education Coalition’s Web site includes information on schools. For example, under “Education Resource Center” you can select a state, then research various topics, such as gifted and talented programs, special education, assessment testing — including the testing calendar.

Guard and Reserve families

The reserve affairs section of the Defense Department’s official Web site provides information about programs to help families prepare for and deal with deployment and other issues, with a booklet summarizing benefits and entitlements. Also worth a visit is the National Guard Family Program site.
