Worst military movies

“Red Zone: Cuba” — Bad acting, bad editing, bad direction, bad lighting, bad sound, bad story, bad everything. Plot summary: Three losers join a paramilitary unit for the Bay of Pigs invasion. The movie is not as exciting as reading that sentence was.

“Iron Eagle” is an all-time stinker from the ’80s, and “Top Gun” comes in second.

Mature enough to drink?

I grew up in England and by age 12 was drinking half-pint shandies (¤ lemonade, ª beer), full pint shandies at 13, and full pints by 15. I had no issues and neither did those I was out with.

These days, though, getting blindingly drunk and stupid is the norm.

This attitude Americans have toward alcohol is absurd. Taking it out of the “bad thing to do” category will keep most kids from doing it. I binged when I was a teen at parties so I looked cool, but as soon as I turned 20 in Korea — where that was the legal drinking age — I didn’t drink to get drunk. When I got to Germany after that, there was no sense to overindulge at parties.

Service for citizenship

In the spirit of Robert A. Heinlein, I’m wondering if we ought to offer all of the illegals in this country (that we catch) the chance to serve in the military in return for citizenship — thus “earning” citizenship as the M.I. troopers did in “Starship Troopers.”

Immigrants who offer their lives in service to the state should be reimbursed with citizenship. It is a win-win scenario for us and them.

I see nothing wrong with that. I also see nothing wrong with a return to universal conscription, so long as it applies equally to both genders and certain safeguards are in place for the protection of the public good and the individual.

Mandatory service for everyone? We couldn’t afford it. As well, it wouldn’t really do a damn thing for the country because we only need but so many service members to take on any threats that may arise. Wasting all of this money just to teach American citizens something is a foolish idea to begin with.
