THE ‘TRUST’ GAME

This game has been around for a very long time. The problem is that many have played it, seen it played, not reported it or turned a blind eye but would never admit to it. Where have the warnings been? Where are the reprimands for senior officers who claim they didn’t know it was going on? Ignorance is no excuse.

HEARING PROTECTION

If you haven’t heard anyone complain about wearing ear protection on patrol, you haven’t been listening. Guys don’t wear earplugs because they feel it hampers situational awareness.

I just went through a rather lengthy process of requesting high-end ear protection for my team and it was ultimately denied. I was infuriated. Does anyone think we’re going to wear ear protection while in vehicles, while trying to use communications equipment or while talking to locals on patrol?

I purchased my own MSA Sordin ear protection and I’ve worn them for two combat tours already. If I need lower profile ear protection, I use SureFire earplugs. They allow you to get a great cheek to stock weld and you can hear some conversation while still protecting yourself from loud noise. The military should get Sordins for all front-line units.

COMMON (MIS)PERCEPTIONS

I’ve been out of the service for a year now, and because I’m 23, every corporate jerk looks down on me. I’ve led Marines through combat and brought them home safely, but apparently, in the civilian world, you have to be over 50 to make a decision.

I have yet to meet a kid in the armed services. Everyone in uniform is an adult. I have served more than six years. I am not a kid. My lance corporal has a combat deployment under his belt. He is not a kid. The 17-year-old who chooses to give up four years of his life to serve is not a kid. My corpsman turned 18 on my last deployment. He has had life experiences many of those much older can’t imagine. The young men and women in the service may not always be the most mature, but there is a big difference between them and some punk kid back on the block.

The sad truth is that there are a bunch of idiots in the service. There are a lot of kids out there who are just playing Marine until they have experiences that force them to mature.
