MARINES DENIED FIRE SUPPORT
This is what this war has come to: Commanders — sitting in forward operating bases, covering their backsides and protecting their promotions — call the shots while warriors outside the wire die. I’m sick to my stomach!

This is politics getting involved where it doesn’t belong. We allow our own to be killed in order to protect women and children who resupply insurgents. The only thing we learn from history is that we do not learn from history.

BETTER RETIReMENT FOR RESERVists
Guard or Reserve troops that have been called to active duty for more than 30 days and have 20 years of service should be able to retire and collect their pensions immediately. They put their lives on the line, too.

Why would anyone be active duty if they could do 20 years in the Reserve and get the same retirement benefits? It doesn’t make sense to give the same reward to someone who works 38 days a year and someone who works 365 days.

It has been a very long time since a reservist had to do only 38 days a year. We are not asking for the same retirement benefits as active-duty service members, but it would be nice to start getting them at age 55.

Wire service makes PHOTO OF DYING MARINE public
If the AP was trying to shock the American public out of complacency by publishing a photo of a dying Marine, it didn’t. The only shock seems to be among those with a vested interest, including family, service members and the secretary of Defense — those who already understand the horror of war.

The military protects journalist’s lives in theater. Perhaps that protection should be removed if they will not yield to the requests of the secretary of defense and this young man’s family. Let them go at it with their cameras and see how much protection that grants them from bullets and bombs!

The D-Day photos you see of beaches lined with our dead weren’t published the month they died, and they didn’t list their names while showing missing body parts for their parents to see. Wrong is wrong.
