CORPS DEBATES MANDATORY CORPORALS COURSE
The only true way to mold someone’s leadership is through experience. Just because someone goes to a course that supposedly teaches them to be a good corporal, they won’t necessarily employ that training. No matter what you do with some people, they will simply continue on their path.
I think the Corporals Course should be entirely voluntary and that those who choose to go to the course should be awarded points toward their cutting score.

Leaders are made. A 19-year-old kid is not ready to be a leader, but give him a couple of years of experience and guidance from some great noncommissioned officers and he will develop into a good leader. That is why NCOs must handle their role as mentors as if their lives depend on it. They might some day.

I absolutely loathed the thought of going to the course until I was forced to go. Best thing I’ve ever been forced to do — honestly.

CHANGE THEIR MINDS BEFORE THEIR HEARTS
Afghans do not regard our fight for them as “help.” Whether right or wrong, all they see are civilians being killed by the U.S. military. President Hamid Karzai is one of our biggest threats as he condemns the U.S. for these deaths instead of criticizing the Taliban who put civilians in harm’s way. To fix Afghanistan, we have to change the mind-set of the people.

DEPENDENTS ALSO SUFFERIN GI BILL STRUGGLE
Dependents have been almost completely overlooked in all the publicity surrounding soldiers and veterans waiting for GI Bill checks. Dependents of 100 percent disabled veterans have also been waiting for Dependent Educational Assistance to arrive.
I am the dependent of a 100 percent disabled Operation Desert Storm veteran who was granted a certificate of eligibility for DEA in June. I am still waiting. What has not been discussed is a plan for emergency payments to dependents attending school while struggling to make ends meet and care for their disabled spouse.

OBAMA RECEIVES NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
As much as I like Obama, this decision makes me laugh. Strengthening international diplomacy? Shouldn’t they wait until those fruits are ripe?

It is like giving someone the Medal of Honor in basic training.
