Miramar to fete Marines, sailors Friday

How do you say thanks? When it’s to show appreciation to Marines and sailors, many recently back from combat deployments to Iraq, say it with free food and fun.

That’s the plan for an afternoon affair Friday at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., where 1,500 leathernecks and sailors will enjoy a “Military Appreciation Day,” said Staff Sgt. Bobbie Bryant, a Miramar spokeswoman.

Marine Corps Community Services is sponsoring the event, which is slated to run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the parking lot outside the 7 Day Marine Mart store and Navy Federal Credit Union.

Nearly two dozen local businesses are participating in the event, offering music, exhibits, games and prizes.

World Wrestling Entertainment superstar wrestler Rey Mysterio is expected to attend, along with San Diego Padres ballplayers and the Miller Girls, Bryant said.

The air station is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.
