Accused faker pleads guilty

BOSTON — A former member of the Lawrence school committee has pleaded guilty to charges of faking his military record.

James Stokes pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to two misdemeanor charges, including presenting a forged discharge document to Lawrence’s Office of Veteran’s Services in 2006.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says Stokes also entered a guilty plea to a charge of falsely claiming in October 2007 that he’d been awarded a Purple Heart.

He faces a maximum of a year in prison on each charge at his May 15 sentencing.

The 63-year-old Stokes had claimed to be a Marine Corps veteran during his fall campaign for school committee.

He was arrested last month and resigned Jan. 11 under pressure from local residents, veterans and politicians.
