Marine recalled as devoted friend at funeral
Posted : Wednesday Feb 6, 2008 7:00:38 EST
Marine Lance Cpl. Johnathon K. Goffred was remembered as a devoted friend during funeral services Tuesday morning at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church on Indianapolis’ Far Southside.
“The word which best captures the essence of John is ‘friend,’” the Rev. Robin Myers told the gathering of nearly 150 people at the church on Thompson Road.
Goffred, 22, of White River Township, was found dead Jan. 26 in his barracks at Camp Pendleton in Southern California. The Navy Criminal Investigative Service is investigating Goffred’s death, and has not released any details on how it occurred.
The Johnson County resident was interred at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
Goffred was a 2003 graduate of Center Grove High School. He joined the Marines in June 2005, and completed a seven-month deployment to Iraq’s Anbar province last year as a rifleman in the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment.
For his service, Goffred received the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
