Lejeune struggles with ID card logjam
Posted : Friday Jul 18, 2008 7:39:35 EDT
CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Officials at Camp Lejeune say they are dealing with a temporary logjam as tens of thousands of Marines, their families and civilian workers renew identification cards.
The base said Thursday it wants people needing an immediate renewal to come to one of the base’s 11 stations and nearby Marine air stations. Those with two weeks or more before their card expires should schedule an appointment through the base Web site.
Lejeune manpower officer Bill Joseph said Thursday the problem is being felt at many Marine bases because of temporary equipment issues. Several thousand people need renewals each week at Lejeune, and waits are running two to four hours.
The base has 40,000 active-duty Marines and sailors, 49,000 family members and 4,500 civilian workers.
