Report: Duke Nukem to fight on Iwo Jima

Is Duke Nukem a Marine?

That has to be a question about the legendary video game character, considering details that have been released about a new trilogy of games featuring the gun-wielding muscleman.

The trilogy, set to roll out beginning next summer, features Nukem in a number of time periods and settings — including the Battle of Iwo Jima, according to a video game blog.

Shacknews.com reported Thursday that “Proving Grounds,” the third game in the trilogy, will take place during World War II, citing an interview with Terry Nagy, chief operating officer of video game maker Apogee Software.

“We plan on making Duke the Forrest Gump of World War II,” Nagy told Shacknews.com.

By that, Nagy meant that they will insert Nukem into historical events the same way the 1994 movie “Forrest Gump” placed its main character in the Vietnam War and other events from the 1960s and 1970s.

Nagy did not provide details about what will happen during the game, but said its plot will explore Nukem’s background.

Marine forces seized the Japanese island of Iwo Jima in 1945 in a battle that included some of the fiercest fighting in World War II. About 20,000 Japanese and 6,800 U.S. Marines were killed during the battle.
