Bill would hike VA mileage reimbursement rate
Posted : Friday Jul 18, 2008 10:10:43 EDT
Senate appropriators approved a bill Thursday that would bump the reimbursement rate to 50.5 cents per mile for veterans traveling to Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers to receive treatment, outdoing their counterparts in the House by nine cents a mile.
The House Appropriations Committee in June approved funding to allow VA to reimburse veterans 41.5 cents per mile.
The rate is currently 28.5 cents per mile.
The Senate Appropriations Committee’s bill includes $138 million in funding to allow VA to raise the mileage reimbursement rate for veterans to offset the cost of driving long distances to VA medical centers.
The House and Senate will work out their differences on the issue when congressional negotiators meet to reconcile the two versions of next year’s defense budget and craft a single compromise bill.
