Pendleton robbery suspects face fed charges

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Two suspects in the robbery of a Camp Pendleton, Calif., exchange were scheduled to appear in federal court Friday afternoon in San Diego.

Little is known about the men, identified as Amandi Bomani Carroll and Quinton Omar Jackson, who remain in federal custody after the Nov. 30 incident at Camp Pendleton’s Stuart Mesa mini-exchange near Edson Range. It’s not clear how old they are, where they are from and how they came to be on the base.

According to the complaint filed by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Carroll, wearing a mask and dressed in dark clothes, allegedly carried a loaded handgun when he entered the exchange through a rear door around 8:45 p.m. Another gunman, taken into custody but not yet identified, allegedly followed Carroll but could not enter the store because the door closed and locked behind his accomplice, the complaint states.

Five female employees were inside closing the store for the evening when Carroll allegedly pointed the gun at them and ordered them to lie face-down on the floor, the complaint states. He allegedly instructed one employee to bind the hands of the others before ordering her to give him cash from the registers. She complied and Carroll left the store, removing his mask as he fled the building.

Area residents chased Carroll, tackling him as military police “who had responded to calls of suspicious activity near the exchange” arrived at the scene, the complaint states. MPs recovered a handgun, and they found cash in Carroll’s pockets.

Carroll allegedly confessed and implicated Jackson as his driver. Jackson allegedly told authorities that he drove Carroll and the unnamed suspect in his Chrysler 300, parking nearby as he waited for them to exit the store. He and Carroll’s other alleged accomplice drove away together and were arrested separately later.

The Stuart Mesa store was robbed two other times this year: once in April and again in September. Base and NCIS officials have provided few details on those incidents, and officials haven’t said whether Carroll and Jackson are suspects in those previous robberies.

“That’s one of the things that are being considered,” said NCIS spokesman Ed Buice.
