JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Investigators have concluded that the crash last year of a Marine Corps jet fighter into a North Carolina farm field was caused by pilot error.

The pilot ejected and walked away from the Feb. 13, 2008, crash, and no one on the ground was injured.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported Thursday that military investigators said the crash of the AV-8B Harrier was caused when the pilot failed to readjust engine nozzles from the “hover-stop” position. The Harrier uses air nozzles for vertical takeoff and landing.

The $40 million jet and its $1.4 million targeting system were destroyed. The report said the jet burrowed 20 feet into the field at Open Grounds Farm in coastal Carteret County, near Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in neighboring Craven County.
