NAHA — Robert Eldridge, an academic known for his historical research on Okinawa, said Sunday he will assume on Monday a No. 2 position at the community policy and planning department of Marines stationed in Japan’s southernmost island prefecture.
Eldridge, 41, who stepped down as an associate professor at Osaka University’s School of International Public Policy Sunday, told Kyodo News he aims to enhance the transparency of the Corps’ activities in Japan and work for the betterment of the relations among Japan, the United States and Okinawa.
The section, commonly known as G5, was set up in 1997 after three Marines gang-raped a 12-year-old local girl in 1995, which touched off massive protests by Okinawa residents.
In 2005, he authored an academic paper making policy recommendations on the Okinawa basing issue and the Japan-U.S. alliance.
