Obama to take on gay ban when time is right
Posted : Sunday Oct 4, 2009 10:57:45 EDT
WASHINGTON — U.S. national security adviser James Jones says the president is committed to taking on the ban on gays serving openly in the military.
But Jones says President Barack Obama has many other pressing matters on his desk, including wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jones says he's sure that Obama will take the issue on "at the right time."
Obama indicated during last year's campaign that he supported repealing the 1993 law. But to the disappointment of his gay-rights supporters, he has made no move to do so.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has written Obama and Pentagon chief Robert Gates saying that with two wars raging, he doesn't think the military can afford to discharge any qualified individual.
Jones spoke on CNN's "State of the Union."
