8th Marine Regiment returns from Afghanistan

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Marines and sailors from the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment will return to their North Carolina base after nearly nine months in Afghanistan.
Approximately 150 Camp Lejeune Marines and sailors will return home Tuesday. The battalion was on the front lines during operations in Helmand province this spring and summer. The province is a known Taliban hotspot and the scene of some of the fiercest fighting in Afghanistan this year.
The Marines were part of a surge of 12,000 troops to Afghanistan in the spring.
