Posted : Tuesday Dec 22, 2009 17:21:41 EST
The Marine Corps is investigating the Dec. 20 death of Pfc. Serge Kropov in a “non-hostile incident” in Afghanistan’s Helmand province, military officials said.
A spokesman in San Diego provided no details about Kropov’s death.
“It is under investigation,” 1st Lt. Greg Wolf, with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, said Tuesday.
Kropov, of Hawley, Pa., was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and was based at Miramar. He had enlisted on Aug. 21, 2006, and was a helicopter airframe mechanic who worked on CH-53E Super Stallions, Wolf said.
His military awards and decorations included the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
