NCIS investigates shooting of man at Quantico

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating a shooting that took place Sunday at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., officials said.
A civilian, who does not live or work on base, allegedly shot a man in the leg while visiting him in base housing about 5:30 p.m., Quantico spokesman 2nd Lt. Brian “Scott” Villiard said. The victim, a dependent of a sailor assigned to the base, was taken to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Va., and treated and released the same day.
“The last we knew [the shooter] was detained and transported to a federal detention facility in or around Alexandria,” Villiard said. He declined to say which facility the alleged shooter was taken to. It is not clear if any charges have been filed, although Villiard said that NCIS reported the man is cooperating with authorities.
Officials declined to release additional details about the alleged gunman or the victim, saying the case remains under investigation. It is not clear what the shooter was doing on base. It also is not clear what type of weapon was used, but Villiard said it was not a military-issued gun.
NCIS could not immediately respond to questions from Marine Corps Times.
