Lance cpl. killed in combat in Helmand

A Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based Marine was killed Monday in Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced Tuesday.

Lance Cpl. Michael L. Freeman Jr., 21, of Fayetteville, Pa., died “as a result of a hostile incident while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan,” according to a II Marine Expeditionary Force press release.

Freeman, a machine gunner, was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, part of the 2nd Marine Division.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 2008. His awards include a Purple Heart, a Combat Action Ribbon and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.

No additional details were immediately available.
